Day 16 ~ Driving to Manchester Beach, CA
Today is Sunday, so we are going to church, but
unfortunately, it is going to be 3:00 PM our time, which is going to give us a
very late start for our 5-7 hour drive to Manchester Beach, depending on if you
are realistic or listening to Google directions….
We have learned the hard way that the coast of California is
foggy and cool…..always. I actually knew
this from 3rd grade social studies.
I didn’t think about it. We felt
like once we got California, it would be sunny and hot. However, it is hot in Southern California and
the inland deserts of California, but
the not coastal parts of California.
Which is good because we aren’t frying to death yet, but bad because we
didn’t use the tarp or heater so woke up to a wet camper last night. We will continue to leave the tarp off, but
still use the heater to keep everything dry.
Church was slightly strange, but interesting. Catholic masses only take 1 hour, but of
course this one was an hour and one half since we were in a hurry to get
going. Ironically, it was St. Joseph’s
Parish, which is the same as the church we attend in Indiana. The priest spoke
about people leaving early from mass after communion…….So much for dodging out
early…..He also talked about someone talking on their cell phone all the way up
to communion, then saying, “Hold on, I got to get communion.” All the congregation gasped, audibly. Then would you believe someone’s cell phone
started ringing incessantly during communion?
We are moving south along the coast of CA. This was a very long drive today, but very scenic. We followed Highway 101 and then 1 through
Redwood Forests and Pacific Coastline. Much
of the journey was at 25 miles or less, so it was very, very long.
